Arthur Pedersen
Program Specialist

Arthur Pedersen is a Program Specialist with UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre (WHC) working on visitor management and tourism issues. He is responsible for developing the World Heritage Centre’s Tourism Programme. His past experience includes work in regional and site-specific tourism planning in Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Much of his work has been aimed at balancing economic development and environmental impacts and he has worked on issues of tourism carrying capacity in fragile areas and in linking tourism benefits to local communities with the goal to aid protection and conservation efforts.

Borko Vulikic

For last few years I am project manager in UNDP, focusing on remediation of environmental hot spots (part of a bigger UNDP regional program implemented in 6 countries in the region, and my responsibility is Montenegro national component). Project jointly with the Government and the local authority approached the challenge of industrial waste spot through an area based development- on one side, as the environmental hot spot was being remediated and the major obstacle to development investment erased, the initiatives aimed at sustainable local development were being planned and implemented on the ground.  In this way, UNDP has utilized the program as a pilot case, as a model on how to change attitudes and behaviors of decision makers to voluntarily shift a single municipality economic model away from heavy industry and toward decentralized, low emissions/low impact production and environmentally responsible business development that would lead to economic growth while simultaneously safeguarding the environment that provides it with the main ingredients for that development.

In parallel ( from the beginning of this year) responsible for:
1. Protected Area System Strengthening (PAS):
Developing capacities of the protected area institutions to design, plan and manage a more representative system of PA through expanding and rationalizing PA system to ensure better habitat representation and more secure conservation status, and through strengthening capacities of PA institutions to effectively manage a more representative PA system.

2. Protected Area Financial Sustainability (PAF):
Improving the financial sustainability of PA system in MNE through enabling legal and policy environment for improvement financial sustainability, securing revenue streams for PA, and development of institutional and individual capacities of PA institutions to raise PA management cost-effectiveness.
