The U.N. Foundation

The UN Foundation was created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner's historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes and activities. The UN Foundation builds and implements public-private partnerships to address the world's most pressing problems, and also works to broaden support for the UN through advocacy and public outreach. The UN Foundation is a public charity.

World Heritage conservation was one of the first priorities embraced by the UN Foundation after its creation in 1998. The UN Foundation works with the United Nations, and in particular UNESCO and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to promote World Heritage conservation and sustainable development in more than 50 actual or potential World Heritage sites in over 30 countries in the developing world. The UN Foundation is the largest non-governmental supporter of World Heritage in the world.

In 2005, with the agreement of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, the UN Foundation joined forces with Expedia, Inc. to create the World Heritage Alliance for Sustainable Tourism, an industry-leading initiative that works to support World Heritage conservation, sustainable tourism, and local economic development for communities in and around UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Alliance engages the travel industry to promote environmentally and economically sustainable business practices around World Heritage sites, educate travelers about the importance of responsible tourism around the sites, and support sustainable development of local communities around the sites. Our goal is to galvanize widespread support for World Heritage conservation, sustainable tourism, and local economic development for communities in and around World Heritage sites.

The United Nations Foundation is the largest source of private funding for the preservation of World Heritage sites in the world. A public charity, the UN Foundation was created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner’s historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes and activities. We build and implement public/private partnerships to address the world’s most pressing problems, and work to broaden support for the UN through advocacy and public outreach. Through our campaigns and partnerships, we connect people, ideas, and resources to help the UN solve global problems. The campaigns we conduct reduce child mortality, empower women and girls, create a new energy future, secure peace and human rights, and promote technology innovation to improve health outcomes.
